With changes to reimbursement for Accu-Chek Performa strips, only people who were using an Accu-Chek Performa Combo pump before June 1, 2012 can source these strips with New Zealand Government funding.
Purchasing Accu-Chek Performa test strips
After 1st March 2013 if you wish to continue using your Accu-Chek Performa or Performa Nano system you will be able to purchase test strips. You can purchase your strips through a pharmacy, or by calling Roche Diagnostics NZ Pty Ltd on 0800 802 299.
Accu-Chek Performa strips can be purchased from Roche Diagnostics for $34.50 incl GST for a vial of 50 strips. There is a freight and handling charge of $10.22 per shipment. A full list of Accu-Chek products that can be sourced in this way is provided in the price list below.
Q. I use the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump system. Can I still get Accu-Chek Performa strips?
A. Patients using the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump system prior to 1st June 2012, will be able to continue to access funded Accu-Chek Performa test strips beyond 1st March 2013. PHARMAC has announced this access will be via Special Authority, click here for the full notification.
Q. What does this decision mean for the support I will receive from Roche Diabetes Care?
A. Accu-Chek Performa test strips are still available in New Zealand, and people using Accu-Chek blood glucose monitoring products can still call 0800 802 299 for ordering and support.

Q. Will the brand of test strips decided on by PHARMAC work with my Accu-Chek meter?
A. No. Accu-Chek Performa test strips only work with:
None of the CareSens brand of test strips can be used with Accu-Chek meters or pump systems.
Q. Do I have to change the glucose meter and strips that I currently use?
From the 1st March 2013 individuals who do not use the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump will have two choices;
1. Continue using their Accu-Chek Performa system to manage their diabetes by purchasing Accu-Chek Performa test strips from a pharmacy, or direct from Roche Diagnostics NZ (see details above).
2. Contact their healthcare professional to change to a CareSens system to continue to access funded supplies.
Q. Can I still use my Accu-Chek lancing device?
A. Yes, you can continue to use your Accu-Chek device as it is able to be used in conjunction with any brand of blood glucose meter. There is no need to dispose of it.
