Holidays And Travel
- Having diabetes does not prevent people from travelling in New Zealand or overseas, but planning can help make travel enjoyable
- Travel Checklist:
- Enough insulin and/or tablets and strips to last longer than the time away
- Take blood glucose testing equipment and spare syringes and/or insulin pen
- Letter explaining that the person has diabetes and that diabetes equipment such as testing equipment, pens and needles etc are required
- Special tips for flying
- Carry all your diabetes equipment and medication in hand luggage
- Carry extra food with you
- Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, sugar-free drinks
- Go for regular walks around the plane, and do some regular exercise while sitting
- Check blood glucose levels every 4 hours
- For people on insulin or tablets, they may need extra advice from diabetes team regarding the management of their diabetes when crossing time zones
- Other tips
- Avoid placing insulin in places that are very hot or very cold
- Carry snack food just in case meals are delayed
- Always carry glucose tablets
