  • Having diabetes does not prevent people from travelling in New Zealand or overseas, but planning can help make travel enjoyable

  • Travel Checklist:
    • Enough insulin and/or tablets and strips to last longer than the time away
    • Take blood glucose testing equipment and spare syringes and/or insulin pen
    • Letter explaining that the person has diabetes and that diabetes equipment such as testing equipment, pens and needles etc are required

  • Special tips for flying
    • Carry all your diabetes equipment and medication in hand luggage
    • Carry extra food with you
    • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, sugar-free drinks
    • Go for regular walks around the plane, and do some regular exercise while sitting
    • Check blood glucose levels every 4 hours
    • For people on insulin or tablets, they may need extra advice from diabetes team regarding the management of their diabetes when crossing time zones

  • Other tips
    • Avoid placing insulin in places that are very hot or very cold
    • Carry snack food just in case meals are delayed
    • Always carry glucose tablets
